As much as I'd like to tell myself that it's the constant Tribe crashing that is at fault, there are other tribes on my radar with occasional geek related subject matter that can get anywhere from ten to one hunderd posts in a day. I've decided to bow out of moderating most of my tribes due to my inability or lack of presence. As much as I felt like this one has been my baby, it looks as if I am a bad mother. Sorry kids.

If you live in CA or elsewhere with an upcoming faire why not organize a meet up! Regardless of whether you are a hardcore ren geek or not just go and have fun and take friends it's always more fun that way. I unfortunately won't be able to make most faires this season, but Fair Oaks is coming up this weekend near Sacramento, CA and the next one I know of is in August the San Francisco Gate faire I believe, There are a ton of others just look if up on the various ren faire websites if you don't already have them bookmarked just do a search, just be sure to check the specific faire website to make sure that faire is still active. If you sew etc why not organize meetings to learn and help each other make costumes and plan a faire to attend in costume!

Messy gift-wrapping service 'Crapwrap' launched by gadget retailer Firebox

December 15, 2008 01:10pm

WHEN it comes to wrapping presents, most men tend to take a utilitarian approach.

The paper is likely to be roughly chopped, the sticky tape applied in industrial quantities and as for bows and ribbons — forget it.

It's perhaps not surprising that presented with an immaculately wrapped gift, many women become suspicious that it may not have received the personal touch.

But one UK retailer is providing a wrapping service so shoddy the recipient will be left in no doubt her partner did it.

Firebox.com is paying 20 of its male forklift truck drivers and warehouse assistants to wrap presents as quickly as possible, using ugly brown duct tape and very little care.

And the $9 service, cheekily called CrapWrap, has attracted more than 500 customers since it launched last week.

Whether it's a book, DVD or something trickier such as a kitchen utensil, the team guarantees to make a mess of it.

Trixie of Lithgow Parcels can even be dispatched in brown paper with a shoddily-tied pink ribbon.

Kevin Smith, 29, is proud to be the worst wrapper at the company's London warehouse.

He said: "I am rubbish. We're not given any instructions. I'm just asked to make a hash of it using lots of brown tape and making sure there are rips and untidy folds.

"It's nice to get away from the normal work: cleaning, packing and moving stuff around. Wrapping is a good distraction."

Sure, some of it is that Tribe has had a series of Cyber-strokes and crashes often, and we've had a few of the previously active people hook up and flirt less here, and then I have tried to recruit more people to inject some life in here and it hasn't caused a skyrocket in activity.

One thing I have found is that if there is an overtone of dating/rejection it does discourage some geeks from putting themselves out there. So would anyone want to consider repackaging this tribe to encourage more activity? I have made quite a few friends here and would love to keep things going. How can we make it a more 'social' tribe without the limitation of 'dating' as the smaller box it is contained in now, yet make room for that potential romantic connection for those who -are- looking?

There are also a few eligible guys there as well... Actually, I might be able to get there later in the evening after a friend's b-day event is over...we'll see. So, go and have a good time if you are in the area and have an inclination!
Midwest, less than 100,000 population, major university, decidedly to the left politically, lots of arts and culture, good public schools, decent housing under 200,000.

I've looked at lots of towns and ruled out quite a few. The front runner is Iowa City, Iowa.
1. As a geek you are known for what?
2. What activity etc do you love spending time doing?
3. What topics etc do you want to learn more about?
4. Where is your favorite place to go to indulge your inner/outer geek?
5. Where do you live. (yes I know your profile may say this, but it's just helpful and you don't need to be real specific) e.g. central texass
6. What questions do you have for others?

ok here I'll start off:

1. I'm known for my love of salamanders and Herpetology
2. I love going herping ( looking for and studying herps). If you don't know what that is look up Herpetology
here I'll save you time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpetology
3. I'd love to learn more about photography, statistics, GIS and a whole slew of other things
4. I move a lot so it all depends on where I am if I'm near a cypress swamp I'll be there, in CA it's hard to decide there are so many cool places but I think the redwoods rank up there at the top for me.
5. I live (atm) in central Texass, but as soon as possible I want to get back to CA when this job is over, probably go back to the Bay area.
6. Pfft these are all my questions now answer me yee mere mortals, that is all!

Here's one of mine - -

As if working at McDonald's in the mall in High School wasn't humiliating enough, I also wore thick black plastic framed glasses, and this was before they were hip. Frequently the local cretins would drop in torment me, and make fun of my polyester pants or stylish visor.
One day, while leaning over the fry bin, and I must have jerked just a little too spasmodically, because SPLOOSH, my glasses went careening into the boiling ooze! Oh the humanity!

Luckily, I had the presence of mind not to reach after them or else I would have drawn back a crispy and delicious claw. I used tongs to fish out what looked like some sort of Jeff Koons black licorice sculpture. So I had to spend the rest of my shift blind and greasy.

Flavin!

My boyfriend broke up with me last night. Yes, Valentine's Day Eve. As I've been thinking the last while today, I realized that my life and friends had come second to his for the entire time we'd known each other, and it's time for me to get my life back on track. I need to find my own group of geeks to be nerdy with, get out there and spend time with other people, start playing games again, and generally build a life around me and my interests. Thankfully, it appears that most of you share my interests!

I like board games, science fiction books/movies/series, creating things, the SCA, jokes in very bad taste, video games, being almost (but not quite) TOO goofy, and sitting around a table until 2am laughing until my sides hurt. I also like getting outside! I just moved to a log cabin up in the Santa Cruz mountains in Woodside, so I plan to start hiking like a mother bear. I also rock climb, including teaching at the local gym in San Francisco (that may change locations once I get the move finished). Mini golf is lots of fun, as is playing catch in the park with a frisbee or playing on a playground (if we can get all the damn kids off the swings).

If any of these sound like fun, or if there is anyone else out there who wants to go do something geeky (I've lived here a year and a half, yet STILL never been to the Tech museum!) or non-geeky-yet-fun with other geeky types, own up, and let's get this show on the road.

I figured if anybody else liked Lexx, they might be found in this tribe.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexx

The second season has Xenia Seeberg, whom I prefer over the first season's Eva Haberman, but I do have the first season as well.

I might be able to finagle a projector, to make it a more movie-like production. Please let me know if you're interested. Show of hands?

So first I want to express regret over the activity in this tribe that I am supposed to be a care-taker of and have neglected. I'd like to use the multiple crashes as an excuse, and though I think the activity has gone down due to members crash frustrations, I still could have posted thread topics. Sorry.

I have put my attention on other things. Mostly RL stuff, but for those of you who frequented my stalker profile, you know that I am still on Tribe and have posted elsewhere. So let me try again. I'm going to lay out a few bullets and see what we can do to revive it here, as I do actaully have great affection for many of you here and miss our banter.

1] It has been next to impossible to get new blood [female] in here and most of the active women [those who post] are our of the dating pool for the most part. What can we do?

2] We had just started a regular thingy with the movies and I'd like to get that or something similar going, regardless of love-connections, I think as geeks, being amongst our own kind is a good thing for us.

3] I'm in Sac, so I won't be able to host as may events as I'd like, but I am still going to try if you guys are interested.

4] I need -your- help as well. If you know of a single female of geeky or geek-o-philic persuasion, can you send her this way? The most common gap here is the wimmin. Also, much as I am quick witted, I've never been able to keep the jolly banter going on my own, so even if it is a one or two-liner, posting and replying would be a great help.

5] I'm open to constructive feedback, if you know of anything that will help this tribe grow, let me know.

Again, I am going to make an effort to revive the tribe here and will start with a few social suggestions, I would ove to hear from you with regard to events and I will also tryto come up with a good conversation subject or two. Remember that even if you are not looking to hook up, but you make for good social grease to create conviviality you are wanted and welcome.

:)

Happy New Year.

What field couldn't be furthered by a self-sustaining power supply with a lifespan measured in decades?
