After eating, we will be setting up the projector and showing geeky stuff like Mystery Science Theatre, Thumb Wars, Lexx, any original (unedited) Star Wars episodes, or whatever strikes the popular fancy. Maybe play Rock Band if you care to. I can't promise that my house will be spotless, or that my cats will make an appearance, but it should be fun.

Okay, we've all got 'em, so let's hear 'em. Let's share our sorriest stories of geek woe.

Here's one of mine - -

As if working at McDonald's in the mall in High School wasn't humiliating enough, I also wore thick black plastic framed glasses, and this was before they were hip. Frequently the local cretins would drop in torment me, and make fun of my polyester pants or stylish visor.
One day, while leaning over the fry bin, and I must have jerked just a little too spasmodically, because SPLOOSH, my glasses went careening into the boiling ooze! Oh the humanity!

Luckily, I had the presence of mind not to reach after them or else I would have drawn back a crispy and delicious claw. I used tongs to fish out what looked like some sort of Jeff Koons black licorice sculpture. So I had to spend the rest of my shift blind and greasy.

Flavin!

Ok, I haven't been very active on here lately, but it's time to fix that.

My boyfriend broke up with me last night. Yes, Valentine's Day Eve. As I've been thinking the last while today, I realized that my life and friends had come second to his for the entire time we'd known each other, and it's time for me to get my life back on track. I need to find my own group of geeks to be nerdy with, get out there and spend time with other people, start playing games again, and generally build a life around me and my interests. Thankfully, it appears that most of you share my interests!

I like board games, science fiction books/movies/series, creating things, the SCA, jokes in very bad taste, video games, being almost (but not quite) TOO goofy, and sitting around a table until 2am laughing until my sides hurt. I also like getting outside! I just moved to a log cabin up in the Santa Cruz mountains in Woodside, so I plan to start hiking like a mother bear. I also rock climb, including teaching at the local gym in San Francisco (that may change locations once I get the move finished). Mini golf is lots of fun, as is playing catch in the park with a frisbee or playing on a playground (if we can get all the damn kids off the swings).

If any of these sound like fun, or if there is anyone else out there who wants to go do something geeky (I've lived here a year and a half, yet STILL never been to the Tech museum!) or non-geeky-yet-fun with other geeky types, own up, and let's get this show on the road.

I hide in-doors. Ok, perhaps not the best way to describe my dilema. Anyways, I like to think of myself as rather geeky. I don't really fit the 'typical image' Tall, dyed red hair, reading glasses, slim slightly muscular build... meh. maybe i'm just imagining it all. ( i know those muscles are certainly imagined XD)
Note: Both above terms are not meant to offend any techies, or perverts on this site, as i probably class as both, i'm just rather modest about it all.

I don't know what I want or need this year, but I like to go and see the new stuff, regardless. And get more schwag that I SO don't need around the house. I still have my epilepsy-inducing Google magnet on my 'fridge from last year's (or was it two years ago?) Google Earth for Mac release.

So first I want to express regret over the activity in this tribe that I am supposed to be a care-taker of and have neglected. I'd like to use the multiple crashes as an excuse, and though I think the activity has gone down due to members crash frustrations, I still could have posted thread topics. Sorry.

I have put my attention on other things. Mostly RL stuff, but for those of you who frequented my stalker profile, you know that I am still on Tribe and have posted elsewhere. So let me try again. I'm going to lay out a few bullets and see what we can do to revive it here, as I do actaully have great affection for many of you here and miss our banter.

1] It has been next to impossible to get new blood [female] in here and most of the active women [those who post] are our of the dating pool for the most part. What can we do?

2] We had just started a regular thingy with the movies and I'd like to get that or something similar going, regardless of love-connections, I think as geeks, being amongst our own kind is a good thing for us.

3] I'm in Sac, so I won't be able to host as may events as I'd like, but I am still going to try if you guys are interested.

4] I need -your- help as well. If you know of a single female of geeky or geek-o-philic persuasion, can you send her this way? The most common gap here is the wimmin. Also, much as I am quick witted, I've never been able to keep the jolly banter going on my own, so even if it is a one or two-liner, posting and replying would be a great help.

5] I'm open to constructive feedback, if you know of anything that will help this tribe grow, let me know.

Again, I am going to make an effort to revive the tribe here and will start with a few social suggestions, I would ove to hear from you with regard to events and I will also tryto come up with a good conversation subject or two. Remember that even if you are not looking to hook up, but you make for good social grease to create conviviality you are wanted and welcome.

:)

Happy New Year.

Pardon me for taking moderator's perogative on this, it is not an activity that I partake in, but adult social networking sites are in serious threat, this is a freedome of speech issue:

Originally From the Gay and Lesbian Task Force Website: http://www.thetaskforce.org/activist_center/say_no_to_section_2257

The federal government is proposing regulations that would effectively kill adult social-networking sites. This is being done under the guise of fighting child pornography. You have until September 10 to object to these regulations. It’s easy to do and essential. A sample e-mail comment is at the bottom of this page. Please forward this information to your friends!

What’s the Deal?
The Department of Justice is proposing regulations to implement a federal law designed to combat child pornography, known as Section 2257. The law was first enacted in 1998 and was amended in 2006 and significantly expanded to include regulation of the Internet.

While many of the regulations pertain to companies that produce adult entertainment magazines and videos (and are extremely burdensome), they would also affect anyone who uses an adult social-networking site. Here’s how:

The regulations would require the people running a site to get and maintain personal information from every user (that means you) who posts a “sexually explicit” photo, including your photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or military ID).
The regulations would allow the Attorney General to conduct warrantless searches at will on the sites’ records, including your personal information.

There are few safeguards over what the FBI can do with the information it obtains.

If a site operator fails to comply with the regulations, he or she would face a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

For more detailed information on Sec. 2257, go to http://www.thetaskforce.org/downloads/misc/2257_fact_sheet.pdf.

Obviously, none of this has anything to do with child pornography. Instead, it is a blatant attempt to end the ability of consenting adults to use adult social-networking sites to meet other people for sex. Obviously, if these regulations go into effect, they will kill this industry.

What You Can Do
The Department of Justice has published these proposed regulations and the public has until September 10 to comment on them.

We need to generate thousands of comments objecting to the proposed regulations – and it’s easy to do via e-mail. Just follow the instructions below.

Why We’re Involved
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc. is involved in this fight because we believe sexual freedom is a fundamental human right and we don’t think the government has any place in relations between consenting adults. These regulations are part of our government’s hypocritical and punitive views about sex, sexuality, and reproductive rights. All of this – from abstinence-only sex education programs to the elimination of funding for accurate and explicit HIV prevention programs – fall hardest on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

For more information about the organizing, advocacy, and public education work of the Task Force, visit www.thetaskforce.org.

Take Action Now
Here is a sample letter with the e-mail address you need to send it to (Admin.ceos@usdoj.gov) and the subject you must include in the subject line of your e-mail (Section 2257 Docket No. CRM 104).

Sample Letter
To: Admin.ceos@usdoj.gov
Re: Section 2257 Docket No. CRM 104

To the U.S. Department of Justice:

I am writing to object to the proposed “Section 2257” regulations.

These regulations are complicated and burdensome on legitimate businesses, and have very little to do with protecting children and minors from pornography. Their reach — particularly into adult social-networking internet services — is overbroad, unnecessary, and would allow the federal government to search and seize personal records of adult consumers without a warrant; a clear violation privacy and constitutional rights.

Specifically, I object to the following provisions:

1. The regulations (18 § 2257(b)(1) and (c)) would force adult social-networking services to obtain and maintain personal information about their users, including the user's photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or military ID). (I must note that the sites already require users to affirm that they are over 18 years of age.) Many sites have tens of thousands of users and it is simply not possible for them to do this. Moreover, many people who use these sites want to maintain their privacy, for any number of reasons, including the sad fact that they might face discrimination and/or violence if others found out they were using these sites. It is still legal in 31 states to discriminate against someone who is gay or bisexual, and in 41 states if the person is transgender. The combination of the recordkeeping requirements and many users’ fears about providing such information will kill the entire industry.

All of this is overkill given that adult social networking sites were not identified as a problem in the production, distribution and downloading of child pornography in the Department of Justice’s own report on “Child Pornography on the Internet” (May 2006).

2. The regulations (18 § 2257(g) and under 28 C.F.R. § 75.5) would allow the Attorney General to conduct unannounced warrantless searches at will on the sites’ records, including reviewing and presumably seizing the personal information on site users. This is an egregious abuse of government authority, an unwarranted invasion of privacy and, in my opinion, a violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

3. The regulations (28 C.F.R. § 75.5(4)) provide insufficient safeguards over what the government can do with the information it obtains through its searches. This, by itself, has a chilling effect on the ability of people to engage in constitutionally protected activities. As noted above, this is particularly dangerous for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

Let me be clear: I believe children need to be protected from coercion into pornography and it is important for the federal government to do all that it can to insure those protections. Sadly, many of the provisions of the proposed 2257 regulations do nothing to address child pornography, but instead are clearly aiming at destroying an industry and ending a legal and valuable way for adults to meet one another.

Sincerely, (your name)

My favorite thing was the SonicVision panetarium show (long way from 70s Pink Floyd laserlight show!), but the CoverGirlz were awesome. I enjoyed looking at the moon thru the big old telescope, although I felt a little sorry for the guys monitoring it - out in the cold, and not getting nearly as much attention as the CoverGirlz.

I was sort of baffled as to the low turnout, but hey - more room for me! It's a way better deal than a night out in SF!

Well, here I am! Geeky Factoids about me for the weekend:

--I won the Office Wii Tennis Tournament and it was the first time I ever picked up a Wii
--In my PSP now: Loco Roco; but I picked up Parrapa Rapper while I was out picking up S-cable-to-3-feed so that I can get my laptop streams on TV
--In the process of picking a Linux distribution to put on my old, 14-year-old Micron box (that thing is the Osterizer Blender of PCs! Metal case, upgraded out the yingyang over the years, and on its last leg but I want to rehab it as a mailserver or hard firewall)..
--Still pissed off that I didn't score a Bag of Crap from the latest Wootoff
So, geek guys in NYC: How have you gotten YOUR geek on in the past few days?

As has been noted on many tribes, Tribe in general seems to have a larger concentration of West Coast members (I'm sure due largely to it starting in SF). Myself, I'm from the Baltimore, MD area. Am I alone on this side of the country, or are there any other East Coast Geeks out here?

A date or two might be nice too, but friendship is the main goal. (not that new lovers aren't welcomed to apply...) Really, I'm bored at the moment and a little bummed. After spending sometime in the wondrous Vancouver, where punks and geeks are heavy on the ground and so very easy to find (the punk geek being the awesomest), coming home to Milwaukee, where both seem to be relatively scarce, makes me sad.

So, who wants to hang out? I'm into books, movies, baking, food, comics, graphic novels, piercings/body mods, knitting, sewing, bikes(!!), computers, games (it has been a while for me for most geeky gaming), and many other things.

-=100 Things You Need To Know About Women =-

You Know Not To Forget Her Birthday And That Her Favorite Flowers Are Purple Tulips. But You Need The Complete List. Please Use It Responsibly.

100. Girls enjoy always having something kind of wrong, like a headache or cramping or something. Remember: No matter how bad it sounds, she's going to outlive you.

99. Most women will not have sex for the first time with a guy unless their legs are shaved. If your date shows up and you spot stubble, she's trying to keep herself in line.

98. No matter how much she reassures you, if you can't get a hard-on she assumes you're not attracted to her.

97. Beware of your girlfriend's single party friend or gay bud. They want her to be single with them and will encourage any bad behavior as often as possible.

96. Jewelry. Now you always know what to get her for a last-minute gift.

95. The sight of you in your socks and underwear is the biggest turnoff in the world.

94. Never trust a girl who has no girlfriends. She doesn't get along with other women because she's either bat-shit crazy or just plain mean.

93. Girls who say, "I love sports!" are lying. Girls who ask you what time the game is on, without specifying which game they're talking about, are not.

92. A random hookup is more likely to result in pregnancy, because a woman has more sex when she's most fertile.

91. She still has all the love letters and cards from her past boyfriends.

90. Just started dating? Women want you to drive, even if it's their car.

89. A girl would prefer to get a $100 gift from Tiffany & Co. than a $500 gift from Fortunoff. Why? Because her friends will ask where she got it.

88. "If I give you my number on Friday, Tuesday and Wednesday are your best bets to score a date. Monday is too desperate, Thursday is too late."

87. Your female coworkers are obsessed with the fact that on average they receive less pay than male counterparts and the fact that they work less overtime and get pregnant is irrelevant to the discussion.

86. Laying a towel down over the wet spot is like putting your jacket over a mud puddle for her, you noble bastard.

85. A recent study revealed that natural blondes could be extinct in 200 years, so unless she's Norwegian, her towhead might be bottled.

84. Sixteen percent of American men have been with a prostitute scientific proof most women are decent in bed.

83. Women always want to believe what you're saying is true.

82. What do women really want in bed? More blankets. They get colder than men.

81. The threesome is not about you; it's about the two girls. If you're lucky enough to score one with your girlfriend, enjoy sex with the other one because there's a good chance it'll end the relationship.

80. If women have an excuse to take a pill, they'll take it.

79. Never trust the woman who gives you the best blow job you've ever had.

78. "I hate when my boyfriend is sweaty and tries to lie down on top of me or cuddle after I've cum. Wait five minutes."

77. The average woman kisses 79 men before getting married.

76. She hates your Xbox more than she lets on. Blow her off for some gaming and she'll soon stop wasting time on a dork like you.

75. Women who are obsessed with their dogs also like to keep their men on a short leash.

74. "Girls who buy their men lap dances and pretend to enjoy it are kidding themselves. They're trying to keep him happy with some controlled freedom."

73. Over the course of her life, a woman will use 10 men for every one she loves. If you lent her your car or helped her move and didn't get laid, you're one of the 10.

72. During emergencies, women are likely to remain calmer than men. Though it should be noted that inventing minor crises on a weekly basis gives them more practice.

71. "Women grow hairs in a lot of the same places that men do lower abdomen, nipples we just get rid of them."

70. Unless they're lesbians, she won't approve of your hanging out with other girls. Even if they're ugly. And, really, even if they're lesbians.

69. If you have something to hide, she'll find it.

68. Eighty-five: The number of males per 100 females in Gary, Indiana, lowest male-to-female ratio of any city with a population of 100,000-plus. The highest male-to-female ratio is in Salinas, California: 114 males for every 100 females.

67. Kiss her before two dates have gone by or you'll be "friended."

66. They can't live without tension. Every once in a while she's gonna pick a fight with you for no reason. Accept this as a running, inevitable theme and your relationship will make a lot more sense.

65. The most painless way to end an argument: Let her win.

64. An online dating service's survey found that a woman's ideal man has brown hair and blue eyes.

63. In the U.S., 21 percent of women ages 18 to 59 hold out for their honeymoon.

62. A British study claims a woman's chances of getting married drop by 40 percent for every 16-point rise in her IQ. The same increase in IQ for a man boosted his chances of getting married by 35 percent.

61. When a woman tells you her problems, she does not want you to offer solutions.

60. Women often cite manhandling of breasts as the biggest foreplay faux pas.

59. "When I'm drunk, I can't come. Not even with a vibrator."

58. If they're going to do it, most wives cheat between the ages of 18 and 29.

57. Most women think they're better drivers than they are. Don't point this out while she's at the wheel or she'll freak and crash.

56. Women ingest about half the lipstick they apply, which means they eat approximately one to three sticks per year.

54. A woman might say she just wants sex, but sleep with her for a while and she'll change her tune. "I've known so many women who think they can pull this off, but they always develop feelings for the guy."

53. According to the American Association of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Angelina Jolie's lips were the most requested celebrity feature among all female patients in 2004.

52. Despite always complimenting another woman's short haircut, she secretly celebrates having one less competitor, since men prefer long hair.

51. Don't call her "cute." In her mind it's the same as "not vomit-inducing." "Sexy," OK. "Hot," yes. "Fucking awesome," only if she's at least slightly buzzed.

50. Women often buy shoes a size or two small because they're in denial about the size of their feet which they can't stand.

49. They dream of one day peeing in a urinal.

48. Women know where they stand looks-wise but worry about being considered cool, about which they're unsure.

47. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, 23 percent of 18- to 34-year-old women live with their parents, versus 31 percent of you losers.

46. Women want to talk dirty, but they're afraid you won't respect them in the morning. Reassure her that letting go in bed doesn't make her less classy and she'll probably go wild. Jagger helps.

45. Twenty-three percent of this MAXIM's readers are women.

44. A psycho jealous girl will do anything to keep her man including anal.

41. If she suddenly cuts her hair short, it might mean she no longer cares what you think of her. But that doesn't mean she doesn't care about someone else's opinion.

40. About half of all brides will lose a good friend over a ridiculous bridesmaid squabble.

39. It never hurts to say you're sorry, even if you don't mean it.

38. Let her beat you at something once in a while poker, chess, Ping-Pong and she'll be more likely to give you what you want, like some peace and quiet.

37. Women's public bathrooms are about three times more disgusting than men's.

36. "At one point or another, I've gone through your things looking for any evidence from past relationships. I'm talking photographs, postcards, mementos, address books, diaries. If you don't like it, get rid of this stuff before letting me in your apartment. It's not about trust; it's about curiosity, and it drives us crazy till it's been satiated."

35. Like you, girls hate nothing more than a clingy partner who needs them every eight seconds.

34. Chick rock strikes a deeply primal chord inside women while simultaneously revolting men. Just sit back and let her sing the Sarah McLachlan or Ani DiFranco song. It's only about four minutes long.

33. The average woman owns eight bras and wears each one five times before washing. Shasta!

32. Girls will not sit on any toilet outside their own home or a five-star hotel. Everywhere else they're hovering above the toilet in a squat.

31. Got a new girl coming over? Your (tidy) bathroom should include clean linen, a box of Puffs Plus, and several full rolls of TP.

30. "Don't caress our faces while we're kissing, unless you really, really, really like us."

29. On a first date, women never order what they really want to eat.

28. Breast augmentation surgery has grown by 257 percent since 1997. The most popular size? C-cup. As if you didn't know.

27. Gain her trust when you're out by calling her at 10 P.M. She'll go to bed content you're thinking of her, even if you're slurping Jell-O shots off some skank's cleavage.

26. Put down the Drakkar and grab a box of Good & Plenty. Women are turned on by the scent of black licorice.

25. At least one of her friends wants to sleep with you.

24. A good but flawed man is a fixer-upper gem, and women love nothing more than home improvements.

23. Every woman is self-conscious about her ass. Tell her you love her ass and you'll see it more often.

22. If you want more sex, tell your girl an attractive woman hit on you that day. Sixty percent of the time, it works every time.

21. More than half of surveyed females between 18 and 25 would prefer to be run over by a truck than be fat.

20. All women think they're smarter than their partners in some significant way.

19. The more piercings she has, the more places she'll let you put it.

18. Once in a while, let her pick the movie and don't complain about it.

17. Any good woman will tell ya, honesty is not always the best policy.

16. Chicks aren't afraid to get kinky; you just have to have the nerve to ask.

15. Girls don't want to date doormats. So make her proud and refuse to give up bowling night with the guys.

14. Don't take a woman to a concert you really want to see she'll just want to leave early.

13. "Women appreciate a big penis, but having one doesn't give you an excuse to suck at foreplay."

12. Studies show women are more attracted to "macho" guys near ovulation. The rest of the month, they're drawn to "good providers," otherwise known as chumps.

11. She likes one of your friends.

10. Ugly girls like to hang out with pretty girls because it makes them feel like they're more attractive. Pretty girls hang out with ugly girls for the same reason.

9. The minute she decides she's even mildly interested in you, she starts making mental pictures of what your kids would look like and imagining her first name with your last.

8. Sixty percent of women in the United States color their hair, according to L'Oral (who are obviously hoping they can peer-pressure the other 40 percent).

7. Dated a stripper? Keep your mouth shut, stupid.

6. Rub a sheet of medium-grade sandpaper across your face. That's your five o'clock shadow when you kiss her. Now rub that sandpaper on your inner thigh. (Mind you, we're not suggesting you shave.)

5. Female serial killers tend to use poison rather than guns or knives.

4. Foghat's "Slow Ride" is not about a trip in the car. Get the hint?

3. The one breakup line she'll never be able to argue you out of: "I'm sorry, but I no longer have feelings for you."

2. Buying a present for your girl? She'll hate it (and you) if she finds out you took along another woman to help pick it out.

1. You'll probably never know how many guys she's slept with. The standard lie is five. Which really means about 12.

It started with what sounded like the first minute or so of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and then went into a very accoustic sounding "Love Shack". It was SWEET, but because of where/how I heard it (don't ask) I will likely never find it again without help. So, HELP!!
Well once again how do we gather our forces for the benefit of evi..er I mean good! Who likes to go camping? I mean more of a car camping type thing because I'm not really sure how many hardcore camping people we have. I guess first who is interested, and second where, and of course third when. Maybe Big Basin Redwoods State Park. I just saw the prices forget the group sites. We can try to reserve the sites all at once and make them near each other. I'll have to talk with some friends I know some place they like to go has a spring to hike to, but I'm not sure if it's Big Basin. Anyway give me some feedback, might have to make this a new thread.

Description: Nothing is sadder than a tandem bicycle with one rider or a solitary bike crossing the playa. Join our Critical Mass inspired, speed dating/ art tour starting from Snowflake Village (the speed dating experts!) Get to know each other as we ride between installations, enjoy them together, switch partners, and ride to the next. If we have any stragglers after the event, we will bar crawl, on bikes, in mass, until you are no longer single, or until I pass out drunk and crash!
Date: Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Duration: 120 minutes
Category:	Parades
Eco/Green Event?:	Yes
Hosted by/Camp Name:	Snowflake Village

Here is the scoop on how Critically Single will be run:

* As fast as people come in on their bikes, you will be assembled into teams of 8, four M and four F.
* You will then be sent out to tour 3 nearby Playa art installations
* You will talk to a different person on each leg of the journey
* You will impress each other with your enlightened perspective on the art pieces (you lucky people on the way back will get to talk about your favorites, instead!)
* By the time you get back 20 minutes later, each F has chatted up each M and vice versa.

*** Then you play the game! ***
Secret voting on a gameboard; the Red Pin of Passion for the one you are super hot for, and the White Pin of " sure... I'd date them". You can play both pins, one pin, or no pins.

We match people who choose each other. Winners get a prize packet and a blessing from the Snowflake Scepter on their union, whether it lasts a minute, a month, or a lifetime.

If you do not succeed the first time, try again! If you do not succeed during the speed dating, we'll launch, in mass, to find alcohol, mixing and mingling all the way. Remember, everyone riding with us is looking! So don't be shy! You are around kindred spirits who are just as crazy as you! ;-)

We may need volunteers to help for an hour each (two half hour shifts.) Volunteer benefits are:
* Exposure to the opposite gender. You will be helping the opposite gender, which will assure that you get seen by EVERY hopeful.
* After your half hour shift, you will get front of line treatment!
* You will get "I helped Critically Single" swag, thus increasing your hotness by an order of magnitude.
* If you do not get hooked, during the Critically Single Bar Crawl, we WILL pimp you.

See you on the playa!
