Now I know we've had plenty of I'm this geek etc and I wanted to see if I an add something to it and get some conversations going in this tribe. I hate getting lumped into categories, but unless there are other suggestions here it goes.
1. As a geek you are known for what?
2. What activity etc do you love spending time doing?
3. What topics etc do you want to learn more about?
4. Where is your favorite place to go to indulge your inner/outer geek?
5. Where do you live. (yes I know your profile may say this, but it's just helpful and you don't need to be real specific) e.g. central texass
6. What questions do you have for others?
ok here I'll start off:
1. I'm known for my love of salamanders and Herpetology
2. I love going herping ( looking for and studying herps). If you don't know what that is look up Herpetology
here I'll save you time: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpetology
3. I'd love to learn more about photography, statistics, GIS and a whole slew of other things
4. I move a lot so it all depends on where I am if I'm near a cypress swamp I'll be there, in CA it's hard to decide there are so many cool places but I think the redwoods rank up there at the top for me.
5. I live (atm) in central Texass, but as soon as possible I want to get back to CA when this job is over, probably go back to the Bay area.
6. Pfft these are all my questions now answer me yee mere mortals, that is all!

Re: Ok now on to the real business!
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 2:10 PM1. I geek for art, sci-fi, comics, biology, great food.
2. I love to go to museums & cons, play geekly games at home with my friends, see geeky films. I also love to shop for glam foods to add to chi-chi tea parties.
3. Id like to learn more about human anatomy (it feeds my art), and love to hit museums to pore over things old and musty.
4. I feed my geek at cons, at cinemas, at group geek gaming get-togethers.
5. I live the SF East Bay, where I am fortunate to have lots of geek activities to choose from on a fairly regular basis : ).
6 DO you like sharing your geekiness with others? If you're looking for a geek to date, would more group events be be helpful in getting you out there, meeting like-minded people? Would you enjoy hanging out with other geeks even if it *didn't* net you a geek date? -

Wed, August 6, 2008 - 1:10 AM1. I geek for biology, history and sci-fi
2. I hang out in bookstores, but I love museums and cheesy historic sites.
3. I'd love to learn more about graphic design, organic gardening, and sustainable building techniques.
4. I live in a place that is devoid of geeks, so my geeky kid and I watch sci fi together.
5. I live in Missouri, just a few miles from a big ol' cypress swamp. heehee
6. I've learned to conceal my geekiness. The neighbors already don't know what to do with us, we keep a low profile these days. I think "dating" carries too much pressure. I'd prefer group outings so I can get to know people first, then consider dating. I'd enjoy hanging out with other geeks even if there were no possibility of dating, -

Re: Ok now on to the real business!
Sat, August 9, 2008 - 9:55 AMNo place is entirely devoid of geeks they're just reperessed! Also probably thinking there is no one else around. Ahhh just flaunt your geekiness and make a carnivorous plant bog in your yard, if you happen to have a yard. Missouri can be cool you have ozark hellbenders! www.hellbenders.org/ As for trying to find others you just have to make something similar to the bat signal that all geeks in the area will understand and flock to! If you are near museums etc and you have time look for a volunteer program. As for the kiddo the museums or planetariums etc may have a "junior curator" program that they can volunteer for. When I was growing up I joined a "junior curator " program and it was one of the most influential things in my life and I made many friends. Other suggestions are if you like Ornithology, Herpetology, Entomology etc look for societies in your state that have meetings and field trips. I'm not biased or anything but : )

Re: Ok now on to the real business!
Sat, August 9, 2008 - 10:01 AMOne thing there are usually differences in herp societies some are geared toward collecting and breeding more of the herp propogation end of the spectrum the other end is the research oriented societies. I would suggest finding either a society in between the two extremes or go for a research oriented society you will learn a lot more and they are usually affiliated in some manner with a school or museum.

Re: Ok now on to the real business!
Sat, August 9, 2008 - 6:04 PMActually Dale, I'm one of the few folks on my street who has a high school diploma and all of my teeth.
We get our geek on. Big organic garden, we rescue feral cats, and build solar air heaters. We hang out in bookstores, we homeschool, we find ways of keeping our minds from going to mush. The electric lawn mower had them talking for weeks. I just figure we provide much needed entertainment.

Tue, August 12, 2008 - 12:36 PM"But seriously. Why do we geek?"
Because the alternative (2 kids, 2 cars, house in the 'burbs) sound so unrelentingly BORING? <G>
