Lend me your experience and help me choose my new home.
I'm self employed so I can live anywhere. I just don't make huge wads of dough. The renovations on this house should take another year so I'm starting to think about where to go next. Here's what I'm hoping for:
Midwest, less than 100,000 population, major university, decidedly to the left politically, lots of arts and culture, good public schools, decent housing under 200,000.
I've looked at lots of towns and ruled out quite a few. The front runner is Iowa City, Iowa.

Very left, many youngling brainiacs going to UCDavis, even split between SF Bay area [ocean] and mountains. Bicycle friendly, wildlife friendly, farmers markets...it's pretty nice. -

Re: Looking for new geeky home
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 7:20 AMThanks Paula. I"m sure Davis is a great place. I really want to stay in the Midwest. I lived in Southern California for 17 years, I've been back in the Midwest for 2. I like being in the middle of the country for both personal and professional reasons. When I lived in California it was just too difficult to service accounts nationwide.

Re: Looking for new geeky home
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 3:41 PMI used to live in Bloomington Indiana, home of Indiana University and really liked it a lot. I live just north of Davis, CA now, and Bloomington is cheaper to live and probably more diverse in culture. I.e. engineering/vet school vs. liberal arts college. I also like Madison, WI, which would be a close second.
