Patton Oswalt is the Geek Demi-god of Comedy.

I just saw yet another episode of Reno 911 wherein Patton appears as a very geeky character. This time he was playing AD&D and struck a fellow player with a real axe. His justification rocked, it was perfect. I worship his geekitude.

Do you know any others who would be part of the geek pantheon?

    <part of the geek pantheon>

My short list so far; more will occur to me I'm sure.

Brian Posehn (Kevin the mailboy on Just Shoot Me, also featured on the Sarah Silverman Show and The Comedians of Comedy tour)

In fact, I nominate the entire touring troupe of The Comedians of Comedy. Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford, Patton Oswalt and Zack Galifianakis.

Matt Kirshen, the British kid who was on The Last Comic Standing was pretty geeky.

    Seth Green

Jason Biggs, mostly for his character in Loser. (love that movie)

Alyson Hannigan, for Willow and Michelle "one time at band camp" Flaherty

Eugene Levy (Yes, I'm on an Amer Pie jag, but this one needs no explanation. He's made a career of awesome nerd/geek characters.)

The entire Kids in the Hall cast. Maybe Kevin McDonald especially, but Bruce McCulloch gets honorable mention for his Gavin character.

    Speaking of ensembles, Monty Python!

Have you noticed that all the good "CSI" inspired shows on CBS have one hot geek per? Criminal Minds: Kirsten Vangsness, NCIS: Pauley Perrette, Numb3rs: David Krumholtz AND Peter MacNicol (Just to be fair and non-sexist.. It's to balance out the awesomeness of goth and geek on the other two shows. *drools* They sooo hit my happy button.)
Sorry, that was off topic. Although I do find all four characters to be a source of mirth. They liven up the sometimes dry shows.

On the subject of brainy geek comedy: Real Genius.

My not nearly complete short list has gotten kinda long and I'm starting to go off on tangents. I'm going to submit this now. More later.. I can't shut it off anyway.

Well, Patton's touring with the Comedians of Comedy right now. They're playing down the street from my place in SF in November. I'm up for it if anyone's interested...

As for geek pantheon, I would second Brian Posehn. His standup act is hilarious too.

I've got an uber-crush on Alyson Hannigan, so I'd second that as well.

Oh, and let's not forget the likes of David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell (sigh) and David Rakoff. NPR comedy rules!

David Cross would probably be someone else I'd consider with his contributions to Mr. Show and Arrested Development.

I would just assume that Monty Python is at the top of all lists, though. It's pretty much a required geek qualification to be able to recite at least some passages from either a Python sketch or film.

I really like David Sedaris but I always thought that was just my closet half-fag coming through. Never really considered him especially geeky. However, his sister Amy's "don't give a crap, do your own thing and joke'em if they can't take a fuck" approach might earn her some geek points.

p.s. Now we see the violence inherent in the system. Help! Help! I'm being respressed.

and my current favorite Python song:

Isn't it awfully nice to have a penis?
Isn't it frightfully good to have a dong?
It's swell to have a stiffy.
It's divine to own a dick,
      From the tiniest little tadger
      To the world's biggest prick.
So, three cheers for your Willy or John Thomas.
Hooray for your one-eyed trouser snake,
Your piece of pork, your wife's best friend,
      Your Percy, or your cock.
You can wrap it up in ribbons.
You can slip it in your sock,
But don't take it out in public,
Or they will stick you in the dock,
      And you won't come back.
